About the application:

The Fall Prevention Tracker was achieved by integrating player motion, orientation, and visual data, a little wearable device can be constructed to pinpoint the place of a player indoors. We propose to design and fabricate a low-cost, wearable indoor positioning system (“WIPS”), consisting of a lithium-ion battery, an integrated triple axis gyroscope and accelerometer, and an embedded 802.11b,g,n,a Wi-Fi interface, such as the WiLink 8 module from Texas Instruments. Indoor positioning will be accomplished by measuring the Received Signal Strength (“RSS”) of the device, reported by the WiLink 8 module, from a few various Wi-Fi access points (“APs”) within 32m of the player. Typically, the received signal power within one meter of an AP will be approximately -30 dBm, and close to -90 dBm at a distance of 32m. This application is a joint of the project developed by Prof. Mahasweta Sarkar, Dr. Paolini Christopher and Prof. Harsimran Baweja in the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, along with two CompE graduate students and three CompE undergraduates to develop a wearable, wireless, sensor for (1) predicting the likelihood of a fall, and (2) detecting when a fall occurs.
