I guess a lot of of us have already stumbled over "winmail.dat" or "attxxxx.dat" attachments in our Android device email clients. These attachment names usually occour, when somebody who is using a Microsoft Outlook EMail client sends you an certain RTF (rich text format) email with attachments. MS Outlook then packs these attachments into a TNEF (Transport-Neutral Encapsulation Format) envelope. Another MS Outlook Clients can deal with this format, but, however, most of the another email clients cannot! They will keep instead an attachment with the above mentioned naming and can basically do nothing with it. While this is a well known (and annoying) circumstance there are already plug-ins for a lot of begin email clients such as Mozilla Thunderbird. For Android device however there seemed to be nothing (and I have been doing quite some research on it). So I finally decided to write my own apk to deal with TNEF attachments. Luckily there was already an existing Java pack which should do the extraction job so that I "only" had to make the Android device apk around it and do some debugging on the original code. My kudos here go to Amichai Rothman for his Java TNEF pack (http://www.freeutils.net/source/jtnef/)!! I originally made this application for my own purposes but then I thought it is worth while sharing it with the community. It is already bi-lingual (english and localized to german) and could receive its job done. The apk itself registers as a handler for *.dat or *.DAT files and for email attachments. When you e.g. test to begin a "winmail.dat" attachment from within your Android device email client or a "winmail.dat" file with your file browser the apk could be launched or you see a chooser box where you can choose this apk. When you do so you will see an alert box. When you press "Fine" the apk will test to extract the contents of "winmail.dat" to a local folder. The default for this folder is "/sdcard/winmail". After it has successfully completed the extraction the apk leaves a notification. When you begin the the notification it will present you the contents of the target folder in other alert box. You can then use any file manager to browser to the target directory to access the true attachments out of the "winmail.dat" envelope. If you begin the apk directly it will show you a setup screen with some explanation on it and the chance to specify your own target directory to where the extracted files could go. Furthermore, the check boy allows you to decide whether each attachment / file could be extracted to an own subdirectory. The only system privileges that the apk acquires upon installation are to be able to write to the external storage (sdcard) and to read from Google Mail.

A Google user: I ran in this Outlook problem once more - and my learnings from the past (Thunderbird on LInux and Victory) are that Outlook players can hardly be educated to properly adjust their settings ... So, I'm extremely satisfied that this is solved now with this program. It really works ok on my Xperia neo V (Android device 2.3). I also appreciate the very precise description. OK, it's not as seamless as click-and-open. Particularly it does not automatically begin the folder with the extracted files on my smartphone. But that has not been my priority, and I acknowledge the program has just done it's first steps. Five stars, and a large thank you to the author.

Andrew Martin-Hugessen: This apk has created opening attachments from Ms Outlook senders simple, but I have 2 concerns: I have to manually go & begin the attachment afterwards, rather than simply being able to click-through. More annoyingly, this now pops up as a possible handler for every file kind I ever begin, not just .DAT files.

A Google user: I would give it 5 stars if you didn't have to jump through so a lot of hoops to receive the attachment opened up.

A Google user: I guess I can't complain..it works as long as you go thru a few steps to read your winmail. I guess it's better than not being able to read it

A Google user: Solved the problem. Well done ( i wonder why this wasn't solved earlier????) Having to navigate to a various folder is a tiny frustrating but at least you can see the attachment when out and about! Now, when you have some spare time can i politely ask you to create an email apk that has this included in the primary sofware? ;)

Shrey Gupta: Apk starts extracting once more when the same 'winmail.dat' is opened. It could begin that directory where the file has already been extracted instead of extracting once more.

Mark Bizuga: It does not save files to the directory I set in "Specify Target Directory". It only saves to the default directory.
